Yamaha has long been celebrated as a pioneer in the piano world, earning a reputation in the United States for delivering exceptional quality and performance.

Before Yamaha’s rise, the American market was dominated by domestic manufacturers like Baldwin, Steinway, Kimball, and Wurlitzer. However, by the 1980s, the decline in quality from these brands created an opportunity for Yamaha to establish itself as a game-changer with its impeccably crafted upright pianos.

Among these, the Yamaha U Series, particularly the U3, became a gold standard for serious pianists who needed an instrument that sounded phenomenal and performed reliably—even under demanding conditions.

While U Series pianos revolutionized the U.S. market, Japan had exclusive access to even more refined models.

Many Japanese homes do not have enough space for a grand piano, so there was a high demand for concert level upright pianos built with the same quality and materials as their C and CF series grand pianos.

The Yamaha UX-3 is one of the premium Japanese market models that was never made available in the United States. Known for its exceptional craftsmanship and advanced features, the UX-3 stands apart from standard upright pianos, offering a level of quality typically reserved for professional and high-performance instruments.

The standout feature of the UX-3 is Yamaha’s patented X-bracing back post design, a revolutionary advancement that provides unparalleled structural integrity and tonal stability. This unique construction distributes tension evenly across the frame, resulting in a more consistent, powerful sound projection. The X-bracing design is an expensive manufacturing method, and sadly, it is no longer seen in Yamaha’s modern upright pianos, making the UX-3 a rare and coveted find.

Additional premium features include:

  • High-grade spruce soundboard for superior resonance and tonal richness.
  • Nickel-plated tuning pins, offering improved durability and precision.
  • Premium felt hammers, crafted with the same high-quality felt used in Yamaha’s handmade CF Series grand pianos.
  • Hand-wound bass strings, delivering enhanced depth and clarity in the lower registers.

Refined cabinet design, featuring a long music rack and a 3-piece front panel for added elegance and functionality.

This UX-3 produces a tone with remarkable warmth and color, ideal for both expressive playing and dynamic performances. Its recently regulated action and keyboard ensure the feel and responsiveness of a true concert-grade instrument.

We sourced this piano directly from our trusted partners in Japan, experts in Yamaha piano service and restoration.

To ensure it meets the highest standards, the piano has undergone the following meticulous refurbishing procedures:

  • Cabinet Overhaul: Polished to remove scratches and restore its original luster.
  • Brass Hardware Buffing: Restored to shine like new.
  • Key Pins and Tuning Pins Polished: Ensuring optimal performance and aesthetic appeal.
  • Interior Clean and Detail: Thoroughly cleaned to maintain the piano’s pristine condition.
  • Keyboard and Action Work: Keys leveled to Yamaha specifications, action regulated for precision, and hammers voiced in our showroom for optimal tone.

This is a great opportunity to own a beautifully restored Yamaha UX-3, an instrument that embodies the pinnacle of Yamaha’s craftsmanship and design.
